Your Attention Please | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
Have you ever felt that your message fell on deaf ears? You send an email, leave a voice mail, text someone or even have a face to face conversation and you feel like there is no one listening? It happens more often than we would like to admit because we live in a world of constant distraction and it is hard to stand out from the crowd.

How do you know if your message is being heard? Here are a few ways to keep you messages to a minimum and still get the attention of the person you want to reach:

• Emails: Keep them short and sweet – when sending an email message, make sure the subject line is direct, to the point and attention getting enough for your email to be read. Then keep your message brief, interesting and NOT a sales pitch. Put yourself in the position of the reader of the message and ask yourself if you would find it interesting enough to read. Guy Kawasaki, in his book Enchantment, suggests that we keep our emails to no more than 6 sentences. I have also heard of people who try to keep it so the whole email can be read in the window of a blackberry without having to scroll. Good advice.

• Voicemails: Keep your voicemail to no more than 15 to 30 seconds and speak clearly. Make your message compelling enough so that your call will be returned. Keep your voice upbeat, be specific and make sure to leave your phone number so your call can be returned.

• Text messages: Short and sweet is the secret. Use them with those that you know are texters and be sure to get to the point fast. Watch out for typos and put yourself in the position of the person receiving the text – would your text be welcomed or deleted?

• Live conversation: Watch for body language, wandering eyes and fidgeting. Keep your conversations lively, interactive and make them dialogues, not monologues. If you feel you are not being heard, you probably aren’t. Be aware of personal space and watch your topics. Remember that you rarely get a second chance to make a good first impression so make your conversation count.

In the world of social media, smart phones, emails and more, it is hard to really get someone’s attention. If you have something to say that you want heard, remember that less is more and creativity counts. Next time you leave someone a voice mail message or even create your outgoing message, keep it short and sweet. Treat other’s people’s time like the valuable resource it is and you will be heard. And now that I have your attention, if you found this article or any that I have written of interest, drop me an email and let me know. Thanks for your attention. Until next week, remember you are two minutes and two people away from your next referral.

Are You a Mac or a PC When It Comes to Networking? | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
Are you a Mac or a PC when it comes to networking? Now you may find this an interesting question when it comes to the way people interact in social situations. In my opinion, every social situation is an opportunity to network. I recently had a discussion with my boyfriend over the difference between the way men and women think and act in business and social situations. We discovered that I am a Mac and he is PC. Knowing which you are can be a huge advantage in the way you deal with people. It can put dollars in your pocket if you know which operating system drives the people you meet – PC or Mac.

Now you may wondering what I mean by this. It sounds crazy but after doing some research which is outlined below, all of what we found out about each other is confirmed through a survey done by Hunch. How people act can easily be an analogy for whether they are a Mac wanting to be a PC or a PC wanting to be a Mac or just comfortable as they are.

Regardless of whether your operating system is a PC or a Mac, it may be a challenge to understand a person with the opposite operating system. With a little information and understanding, it can be done. The result will be that you will attract more prospects and clients and close more business simply by knowing which operating system is being used and adapting to it. How do you interact with people you don’t know (yes, do what your mother taught you not to do, and “talk to strangers”) and use your natural thought processes? The following information about Mac and PC users will help you decide if you are a Mac or a PC. Either way, you are equipped with all you need to grow your business through networking.

Here are some facts put together by Hunch and reported by Mashable, from 700,000 users visiting Hunch.com:

• About 52 percent of respondents said they used a PC, compared to only 23 percent who said they used a Mac.

• Mac users are overwhelmingly younger. PC people are 22 percent more likely to be between the ages of 35 and 49 while Mac people are 22 percent more likely to be between 18 and 34.

• Mac people are more urban. 52 percent of Mac people live in the city while PC people are 18 percent more likely to live in the suburbs. Twenty-one percent of PC people live in rural areas.

• Politically, 58 percent of Mac people are liberal while only 36 percent of PC people describe themselves that way.

• Of PC users, 54 percent have completed at least four years of college, compared to 67 percent of Mac users.

• 26 percent of PC people say they prefer to fit in with others, Mac people are 13 percent more likely than their PC counterparts to say they want to be perceived as unique and different.

• PC people are 23 percent more likely to say they seldom throw parties, while Mac people are 50 percent more likely to say they frequently throw parties.

• PC people are good at math. They are 38 percent more likely than Mac people to say that have an aptitude for mathematical concepts while Mac people are 12 percent more likely to say their verbal skills are stronger than math skills.

• PCs favor impressionist art while Macs like modern art. 71 percent of PCs describe themselves as casual while 32 percent of Macs describe their style as either upscale, chic, designer, unique or retro.

• Mac people are 80 percent more likely than PC people to be vegetarian.

• 36% of PC people are liberal

• 58% of Mac people are liberal

• PC people are 43% more likely to say that working with computers is akin to struggling to learn a foreign language.

• Mac people are 21% more likely to consider themselves computer savvy gearheads.

Looking at all this information in the context of whether you are talking to a Mac or a PC can make the difference between whether you simply take a bite out of the “apple” in conversation with someone or really get to it’s core. Whether you do this for business or personal reasons, you are more likely to get the results you are seeking. So figure out if you are a Mac or a PC or even a crossbreed and you will be wired for sound and ready for business.

So this Mac is looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you on the internet highway when you send me your thoughts. I can be reached at Rhonda@twominutenetworker.com. Until then, I will be on my iPad in my unique outfit, getting ready to throw a party and have a vegetarian networking lunch.

Face it, Facebook is Good for Business | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
Let’s face facts, Facebook can be great to help you market your small business. It is the most popular social media networking site on the web and according to Facebook’s official facts, the following is true:

• There are over 750 million active users and growing daily.
• 50% of active users log on to Facebook on any given day.
• People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook
• The average Facebook user has 130 friends.
• The average Facebook user creates 90 pieces of content each month.
• More than 30 billion pieces of content including web links, news, stories, blog posts, notes and photo albums are shared each month.

Based the facts above, have you created a Facebook business page yet? This is your opportunity to show up in more Facebook search results as well as promote your business and connect with your prospects, customers and clients on a more personal level. If you have not yet started to create your business Facebook page, here are a few tips to help get you started:

1. Set up a page (formerly known as Fan Pages) and now called simple Pages where members can “like” the page instead of becoming a fan.

2. Decide on the type of page you want to have and give it a name. Check the box indicating that you have the authority to represent the person, business or brand you are setting a page up for or simply click on “Create Official Page”.

3. Customize your page and add your photo or logo as well as basic information about your business or the product or brand you want to promote. Keep in mind that this is the page you want your customers, clients and prospects to see, not the page where your friends will look for personal information about you.

4. Invite your business Facebook friends to “like” your new page and include those personal connections on Facebook that may not be familiar with your business and are the people you want to know more your business or to interact with them in a business capacity.

5. Use one of the many social plugin widgets available from Facebook on your company or personal website to promote your Facebook page.

6. If you have a blog or newsletter for your business, post a link to the Facebook page inviting your readers to connect with you on your Facebook page so you can interact with those people on a more personal level. Don’t forget to add a link to your Facebook page to your standard email signature and cross-link with Twitter.

7. Remember to add content often – once or twice a day to your Facebook page as your readers are looking for new content and you want to engage with them and have them come back often. Post news or stories related to your business to make it interesting.

You now have 7 steps to start creating your business Facebook page. Social media is here to stay and the more ways you can connect with your prospects, clients and customers in conversation, the greater the likelihood of creating a relationship that will ultimately lead to sales and clients. If you don’t have the time to do this, hire a virtual assistant. Facebook could be the marketing method you have been missing.

Social Media is Here to Stay | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
Social media is here to stay. Social media has not only changed the way that people communicate with one another but it has gained an increasingly important role in business. With sites like Yelp, Facebook, Kudzu and others, consumers have ways to communicate with one another that were previously unavailable.

Prior to social media, companies did not have a direct line to their customers when it came to their product or service. Social media is good news is this regard. Market surveys were the main way that company’s got input. Now with social media, a company simply has to ask their friends and followers to give them feedback so that others will know about their company. Now companies have more knowledge of what people want and need and they can more easily identify the problem areas of their business and correct it with direct feedback from their customers. They now have ways to give away promotions, coupons and other goodies to those people that follow them on social media. This is a great way to reward loyalty at a low cost. All good news for businesses who use social media.

The not so good news is that with social media websites like yelp and other similar ones is that customers now are free to post their opinion about your product or service so that hundreds of thousands of people can see it. A bad review can cost you many many customers and a good review on a social media site can bring you lots of business. The danger is that a customer or client who is not happy can tell the world with the few clicks of a mouse. Now that is not good news.

So has business been changed by social media? You bet it has. Businesses can no longer treat customers poorly if they want to keep their ratings and reviews positive. It is very difficult to get a customer to remove a bad review so the lesson here is to treat customers right from the beginning.

According to a report cited in eMarketer, 63.7 percent of internet users in the U.S. will use social networks in 2011. This is a huge number of new prospects for business. EMarketer reported that four in five U.S. businesses (with at least 100 employees) will take part in some sort of social media marketing this year, up from just 42 percent as recently as 2008. This number is expected to continue to rise, especially in light of related surveys have revealed that as much as 63 percent of small businesses feel as though social networking makes a “significant” impact on their sales and revenue.

Social media has affected almost every industry. Social media conversations happen 24/7. The days of nine to five are long gone. Today there are more than 600 million users on Facebook who are active on the site. Interestingly, the fastest growing demographic is people over forty. More than 300 million people spend at least one hour a day on Facebook and approximately two hundred million people are active on Twitter. There are over 100 million use LinkedIn and what is so amazing about this is that in the year 2000, none of these social networks existed.

Why do top leaders like the Dean of Harvard Business School, Nitinn Nohria use social networks? Because they provide a way to communicate in real time to the audiences they want to reach. The beauty of social networking is that a message can be written anytime, anywhere and be shared with those people who are interested without the need for voicemail or email. Another great part of the social media is that there is no hierarchy to get through. On the social network scene, everyone is equal. What a sobering thought.

Social media has certainly changed business and changed the way we communicate. I for one like the old fashioned way of networking, talking to people face to face and using the old fashioned telephone. Guess I am somewhat like Andy Rooney, I like the old way of doing things, talking to people in live conversation one on one. Guess that is why I still go to networking meetings, coffee meetings and mixers. It is not that I don’t love the social media sites, it is just that I prefer the personal touch. Social media is here to stay and has its place in business but nothing will replace the human touch of a hand or the sound of soft words. Now I guess if you don't agree, you can always post that on Facebook. Hmmmmmm, that is hard fact to face.

The Power of Recommendations in Networking | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
Have you ever subscribed to a newsletter such as this one because someone you know, like and trust recommended that you would find something of value in it? Recommendations are by far one of the most under used methods of networking.

If you are recommended as having a valuable product or service by your customers or clients, then you have found a free way to promote your business because of your quality, the trust and admiration of your customers and the reliability of their word of mouth advertising. Don’t underestimate this great achievement as recommendations are earned, not given away freely.

Think about LinkedIn for a moment and how a recommendation on this one social networking site can elevate your level of expertise in the eyes of others and perhaps set you apart from your competition. Are you giving recommendations to those people that you have had great experiences with? Have you been so bold as to as for a recommendation from those who have told you what a great job you have done? If not, get off your “ask” and request that the person who said those great things put them in the form of a written recommendation that you can post on LinkedIn. This is just one of the many places that a recommendation can bring you new business and elevate you above the crowd.

When someone you know makes a recommendation about you to another person, this is one the highest forms of trust and reliability of your great business. Remember to thank those people that do recommend you. It will reinforce how important it was to you and hopefully encourage more recommendations.

Networking groups like Letip, BNI and so many others are based on the premise of leads or recommendations. Joining one of these groups and allowing members to learn about you and experience your product or service in a positive light is one of the easiest ways to get a recommendation. If you have not joined a networking group and your business lends itself to benefiting by having others try your product or service, look into groups like this. It is like having an unpaid sales force marketing you 24/7. I do recommend BNI and Letip as two of my favorite networking organizations.

Finally, remember to be true to your customers by listening, speaking and offering solutions to your customers for you will earn their recommendation. The time you give to your customers is not a short term investment but one that is long term allowing you to build relationships with your customers which will make your business more prosperous.

In order to build strong relationships with your customers, keep in touch with them. Don’t always be selling but take the position of being a giver. Find out how you can help them, go the extra mile for those who are loyal to you and have your information easily available in the form of a clean website, blog or LinkedIn profile.

Keep in mind that what someone else says about you is 1000 times more powerful than what you say about yourself. Know that it is your customers who are likely to bring new customers to your business. Because there are so many different companies that may offer the same product or service as you do the best way to compete is to establish strong relationships with your customers and know that your raving fans or loyal customers will recommend your business to their friends and families On that note, if you liked this article, or this great newsletter, recommend it to your friends and family. In fact, you can even share it on Facebook, LinkedIn or tweet about it. Thanks in advance for your recommendation.

How Social Media Influences Our Lives | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
The influence of social networking has changed our lives forever. We can communicate our ideas, feelings, events and so much more in an instant. We are surrounded by online social networking sites and platforms that we use to communicate with friends, family and colleagues.

The 2011 social media statistics are pretty astounding as noted in socialnomics.net.

Did you know:

1. Over 50% of the world’s population is under 30-years-old.

2. In 10 years over 40% of the Fortune 500 will no longer be here.

3. Social Media has overtaken porn as the #1 activity on the Web.

4. Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.

5. 1 in 5 couples meet online; 3 in 5 gay couples meet online.

6. 1 in 5 divorces are blamed on Facebook.

7. 2009 US Department of Education study revealed that on average, online students out performed those receiving face-to- face instruction.

8. If Facebook were a country it would be the world’s 3rd largest and 2x the size of the U.S. population.

9. 80% of companies use social media for recruitment; 95% of these using LinkedIn

Based on all of this information, ask yourself, how much do you want to communicate about your life on these social networking sites?

Mixing your business life with your personal life can be a huge challenge from many viewpoints. Here are a few things that you may not have considered when you entered the world of social networking and created your Facebook page, twitter account, LinkedIn account or one of so many more.

1. Keep your personal information personal. Ask yourself if your business contacts want to know about your family where you are having lunch or dinner or what movie you saw. Be careful what you post.

2. Post your photos on social media sites knowing your audience. If you want to project a professional image, then make sure that the photos you publish are ones that you want to be seen and would not be embarrassed if someone from your professional workplace had seen it.

3. Take advantage of the business tools that the social networking sites offer. For example, Facebook has a business only tool anyone can create. It is separate from your personal page, and is a better forum for more business oriented content. Once you have 25 fans, you can create a vanity URL.

4. Use Twitter to send out postings of articles you or your colleagues have written. Get to know who is following you on Twitter and be cognizant of what "tweets" you are putting out there. Remember that business and pleasure don't always mix.

5. Be mindful of the privacy practices of social media sites. When you put content on a social media site, know who can see it and what it takes to remove it.

All in all, social media is here to stay. It is used in almost every aspect of our lives. In addition to the social networking sites mentioned here, don't forget about sites like yelp.com where consumers can rate your business. These sites are getting more and more common so dealing with your customers who are not happy means that they now have a much more public forum to vent their complaints. Times are changing and from a business networking standpoint, it is critical to know that how you treat a client or customer may not stay between the two of you but may actually become very public.

In summary, social media influences every aspect of our lives.

Be mindful of how you use it and get educated on how it can serve you and how it can hurt you. My suggestion is to treat your social media sites carefully --- watching what you say as you never know where and how it will be repeated. I plan on following the advice my mother taught me years ago......if you can't say anything nice about somebody, don't say anything at all.....the advice she gave me that I don't plan on following and never have is...."don't talk to strangers" and of course... master the "f" word, follow-up. That way, I can be sure I will always be two minutes and two people away from my next referral.

Until next week, keep tweeting.

Your Ideal Client is Just Two Minutes Away | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
How can you find your ideal client? How many times have you wasted valuable time and energy with suspects, not prospects? Most of us have spent time with people who are not our ideal client. Unfortunately, we don’t find that out until we have spent way too much time with an individual only to learn that the person we have spent time with either does not need or want our product or service, cannot afford it, is not at the right time in their business to need your product or service or the person you are spending time with is not the decision maker. So how do you spend your time? Are you talking with prospects or are you spending time with suspects? If you are spending too much time with the wrong people and your business is not growing, you can change this simply by knowing who your ideal client or customer is and then creating your elevator pitch, marketing materials and networking plan with this in mind. My rule is “the smaller the niche, the more you get rich”.

Here are a few tips to help get your started:

  • Make a comprehensive list of the characteristics of your ideal client or best client. Be specific and imagine that this person has a name and you know where they live. What are the age, sex, income level and general background of your ideal client and customer? What are their hobbies and interests? Where do they live?

  • What is the problem that keeps your ideal client or customer up at night?

  • What are the most important things to your ideal client or customer? This would include things like price, quality, recommendations, service, guarantees etc.

  • If you need information, check out quantcast.com if the type of data that this site provides would be helpful.

  • Use Alexa.com to search out your competitor’s websites to learn who their audience demographics are. Once you have identified this, you can find forums related to your niche and identify the top issues and concerns of your target market. Use this information to identify your ideal client.

  • Identify the groups that your ideal client belongs to on LinkedIn and get involved in discussions.
Now that you have a few tips to get you started, make the most of your networking time by being where your ideal client or customer is likely to be. If you know what association meetings, networking groups, service organizations or social events that your ideal client is likely to attend, then make it a priority to be there as well. Showing up and being prepared is just as important as knowing who your ideal customer or client is. Take the time to identify who your ideal client is and you will spend less time with suspects and more time with qualified prospects.

This is the “ideal” way to get more business with less effort. You next customer or client is just two minutes away.
