Safety Net-Workers are Opportunists

Power Thought of the Week

By Patricia Parham, Ph.D., Contributing Writer

We often network with specific goals in mind. And, sometimes we overlook possibilities that the universe is offering because of our single-minded devotion to our stated agenda. Listen for unexpected “gifts” that may accrue from networking and consider how these people, materials or ideas might support you in unexpected and profitable ways. For example, in networking for clients, I was steered to a large, auditioned chorus which has brought work, extended family, and joy into my life.

  1. It's like looking at something so closely with a microscope that we fail to notice the other things that are occurring all around us. Networking with a specific goal is not such a bad idea but we shouldn't be so dense as to not realize the other windows of opportunity that are being opened along with the contacts.
