Six degrees of separation is a concept promoted by the actor Kevin Bacon. It means that if a person is one “step” away from each person that he or she knows and two “steps” away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is no more than six “steps” away from each person on Earth or a population of 6.6 billion people.
My son Brian is a member of an Honorary Society that meets to have dinner with astronauts. He has a plaque with their signatures. I noticed two, Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell. Buzz Aldrin is the second man to land on the moon and Jim Lovell is the person honored in the movie Apollo 13. Jim Lovell invited Tom Hanks, the star of the movie, to his home. Although the information I learned about Lovell is minimal, it’s certainly information that I am highly unlikely to learn on google.
For whatever it’s worth, I was delighted to think I was only one degree of separation away from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for the Apollo 13 movie. Knowing me would then place you two degrees of separation from the second man on the moon and the astronaut responsible for Apollo 13...
