Entrepreneurs Adjust Strategy When the Federal Reserve Promotes Inflation | STRATEGIC BUSINESS AND MARKET TRENDS

Federal Reserve Mandate and Tactics

Consumer Prices Before and After; the Federal Reserve Created in 1913

The Federal Reserve System acts as the central bank of the United States and "manages the economy" using inflation management tools. The private company was given special powers and duties by Congress in 1913 to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system. Over the years, its role in banking and the economy has expanded.

Although they have four areas they are tasked with managing, we will discuss only one today. Here is a quote of that mandate from the mission statement on the Fed site, "conducting the nation's monetary policy by influencing the monetary and credit conditions in the economy in pursuit of maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates". Simply put, they control the interest rate and the money supply with the purpose to deliver "maximum employment" and "stable prices". How are they doing so far?

The tools they use are money supply, meaning printing or destroying dollars in circulation and raising and lowering the interest rates so businesses and consumers are encouraged to change their borrowing and spending habits.

Who’s Affected by The Fed Policies & Inflation?

Entrepreneurs and growing small to medium businesses make up the largest portion of the inputs to productivity. Centrally managing their ability to grow through Fed Policy has a global affect on GDP of a community or group of exchange partners. If you are living and doing business in an "industrialized nation" you are part of the G20 partnership of central bankers who have a similar mandate to the Federal Reserve and affect you.

• Entrepreneurs (business venture capital, CapEx costs, payroll)
• Small to Medium Business (credit, materials costs, payroll)
• Consumers (increasing cost of living, healthcare, retirement, insurance, decreased investment return)

What Trends Should Entrepreneurs Care About?

Business people of every size should have their eye on the changing or trending of markets as well as global policy makers like the Fed. You may think it’s a political thing, and it is but, that does not negate the fact it will affect you and preparation is the only prophylactic. If you are in business with a significant CapEx and asset purchase requirement, the PPI and CPI are to be closely monitored. These are the first place federal agencies begin letting the “cat out of the bag” that inflation is increasing. Closer to home, just watch gasoline prices and consumer goods. You family grocery & utilities bills will likely indicate much more than you give them credit for.

Strategic Changes to Your Business Plans

Now that you monitor inflation, what can you do when the trend turns upward? Use your common sense, your past inflationary experience, study and adjust your product or service lines to suit the inflationary environment. There are features of your business that suit this environment, expand those, and reduce those that are at risk. Hedge your bets to ensure not losing ground at a minimum. If your business as a whole is entirely at risk during inflationary periods (study history), then consider major changes or offsets to alternate sources of income and growth with a new business that thrives when inflation rises.

You, as entrepreneurs, are the primary driving engine of all economies globally, no matter what country you reside in. It is the central planners, who believe they can change the course of supply and demand to their will and purposes that are afraid of you. Observe and monitor trends, trust your instincts and be willing to modify your strategy and plans to mitigate the threats and exploit the opportunities they provide for those willing to live and do business in this ever-changing environment.

Chaos can be your friend if you follow the example of nature. Fires, earthquakes, tornadoes and man do damage to her everyday and yet, the tree bends, the seeds replant themselves and bloom and landscapes come to rest; always settling back to a state of equilibrium. That equilibrium state always has a trending element of growth in it, albeit a slow one. It is natural law; as dynamic and evolving beings we must grow and adapt or die and become extinct.

Ten Top Tips to More Referrals | THE SLOGANATOR

Rhonda L.Sher
1. The smaller the niche, the more you get rich. Determine who you want to work with and make sure that group of people is targeting your same market but not competing with you. It is the easiest way to to get and give referrals.

2. Be shameless. How many of your friends, business associates, family members and others have no idea what you do or who would be a good referral for you. Wear a shirt with the name of your company on it or in your correspondence or email, make sure you have your professional signature somewhere on it. You might even consider putting a license plate frame with your tagline and website or even a magnetic sign on your car.

3. Remember the two most powerful words in the dictionary: thank you. Say thank to those you give you referrals even if they do not turn out to be actual business. It is so powerful to send a small gift, a handwritten note or pick up the phone. People love to be acknowledged so remember to say thank you.

4. Get off your “ask” and use it to let others know you need referrals and do business by referral. Ask others if they can help you by giving you referrals. Make sure that the people you ask are raving fans of yours and that you have earned the right to ask for referrals. People are not mind readers and often do not know that you would like to receive their referrals. Teach them what a good referral is for you and ask them if you can contact the person they are referring directly and use their name.

5. Find 3 or 4 power partners and meet with them on a regular basis to share referrals. This strategy is worth its weight in gold when you realize that your job is to help others by giving them the best possible referral to the professionals they want to meet. Those professionals are doing the same for you.

6. Touch, touch touch. Create a relationship marketing system that touches the people you know who can be your best referral sources on a regular basis. You can do this with newsletters, cards, calls, email, videos and so many other ways. Do not be selling, be sharing by keeping your name and face if front of those who are likely to send you referrals.

7. Ask open ended questions. When you meet people, make it a point to learn who they are, where they go, what makes them different from others and how you can help them. It opens the door to friendships and create rapport. Once you know more about people, you can help them. This gives you the right to ask for referrals at a later date. Always remember to give first. It is the secret to getting what you want.

8. Be a perpetual student. Read books on referrals, sales, networking and so much more. You will always learn something new and if you attend a live class, it is a great way to find other like-minded individuals who are also looking to grow personally and professionally. It is also a great topic to share with those you meet. You will never be at a loss for something interesting to say when networking.

9. Initiate a mastermind group. This can be your secret weapon to getting referrals. Hand pick those you want to join you in your group. Set the rules, keep everyone accountable and meet on a regular basis. Mastermind groups can be a powerful way to get and give referrals.

10. Join a networking group which has power partners or those people who target your market in the group. Take a role of leadership and you will get referrals. Be clear on what a good referral is for you and make a point of bringing in qualified referrals for others in the the group.

It is not a race to get referrals but a slow steady process to keeping your prospect pipeline full.

Fakeware! Be aware! | CEO SPACE

Leslie KnightFakeware (fake security software) is a popular security attack. The virus, trojan or spyware masquerades as software that is useful, trying to help you protect your computer. Its headline looks official. You will see a pop-up saying something like this: “Your computer is infected. Would you like to remove these infections?” It might even show a list of infected files to get your attention.

Of course! You click YES. The next thing you know, windows are popping up all over the place saying your computer is infected. When you try to launch your browser it takes you to a malware site seeking to extract a payment. At that point you really are infected.

The version my clients have seen uses the title XP Antispyware 2010 (last year it was 2009). Titles can change. The first question you should ask is “Did this message come from my security software?” If you are running AVG, Norton, McAfee or whatever, the pop up message should have their banner. If the answer is NO, try to close the popup window. Call your support professional.

How did this virus sneak past security? It didn’t. It happens when you visit a website that is infected or has a malicious intent. The fakeware launches through a pop-up window that suggests you need to take action now.

What can you do to prevent this problem?
  • Block popups in your browser.
  • Be wary of websites you visit. If a deal that attracted you is too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Don’t click on links from people you don’t know.
  • If your business can afford it, invest in hardware and software that will limit the websites you and your employees can visit. I know that sounds harsh, but many of the infestations come in because people are just surfing the web.
What if you become infected? In this case, we downloaded free software from Malwarebytes which cleared the infection. Understand, that once your browser is compromised, you won’t be able to download a solution. Just turn off the computer and call for help.

The lesson: Be wary of the websites you visit. Not all of them are as friendly or as innocent as they seem.
